Creative Talent at Another NUA Big Book Crit

Another superb Big Book Crit at Norwich University of the Arts.

It was brilliant to see so many familiar faces, and even better to see the quality of the work being shared. Norwich continues to feel full of creative talent, and events like this make that visible in a very direct way.

Portfolio reviews can be intense for students and graduates. You are putting your thinking, your taste and your technical decisions in front of people you may not know. That takes confidence.

It is also one of the most useful things a young creative can do.

Why Portfolio Crits Matter

A portfolio is not just a collection of finished work. It is a way of showing how you think.

Good reviewers are not only looking for polish. They are looking for judgement, curiosity, clarity, decision-making and evidence that the person behind the work can keep improving.

That is why critique nights are valuable. They give students a chance to practise talking about their work, hear how it lands, and understand what might be missing from the story they are telling.

Sometimes a small adjustment to structure or explanation can make a portfolio feel much stronger.

The Work In The Room

The portfolios I viewed were genuinely impressive.

One student in particular had a portfolio that many seasoned professionals would be envious of. The craft was strong, but what stood out was the confidence of the thinking. The work had a point of view.

That is not easy to teach, and it is not easy to fake.

A Strong Creative City

Norwich has a habit of producing thoughtful, distinctive creative people. You can feel that at events like this. There is a mix of talent, generosity and ambition that makes the local creative community stronger.

I hope every student and graduate who attended found the evening useful, whether they left with practical changes, fresh confidence or a clearer sense of what to do next.

I am already looking forward to the next one.
