What Slow BBQ Taught Me About Better Work
Beyond crafting code, my other passion is BBQ.
Slow cooking brisket, pulled pork, beef cheeks, ribs or wings is one of those things that looks simple from the outside and becomes wonderfully detailed the deeper you go.
Some cooks take 16 to 18 hours. That is a long time to manage heat, smoke, seasoning, texture and timing. It is also a long time to stand around with good company, a cold beer and the quiet satisfaction of making something properly.
The Joy Of Slow Work
There is a rhythm to low-and-slow cooking that I really enjoy.
You prepare carefully, then you wait. You pay attention without constantly interfering. You learn that small changes can have big consequences, and that rushing usually makes things worse.
That is a useful reminder outside the garden too.
Not everything good happens quickly. Some work needs time, restraint and patience. Some outcomes depend less on dramatic intervention and more on doing the basics well for long enough.
Craft, Timing And Restraint
BBQ rewards preparation.
The quality of the meat matters. The rub matters. The fuel matters. The airflow matters. The rest matters as much as the cook. You cannot fix every problem at the end.
There is a familiar lesson in that for digital work. Good results rarely come from last-minute heroics. They come from clear planning, sensible decisions and attention to details that may not be visible in the finished thing.
The best work often looks effortless because the effort has been put in at the right moments.
The Table Is The Point
As much as I enjoy the cooking, the best part is still the moment everyone gathers around the table.
Food has a way of slowing people down. It creates a reason to talk, laugh, compare notes and enjoy the result together. Whether it is brisket, beef cheeks, pulled pork or buffalo wings, the real value is in the shared moment.
That is probably why I keep coming back to it.
The process is satisfying, but the point is people.
